Southern Cross
Constructed in 1892, the Southern Cross Post Office is one of the oldest surviving government buildings in the town and an important reminder of the region's rich goldfields heritage.
Designed by renowned Government Architect George Temple-Poole, the building originally housed the post office, residence, courthouse, and Mining Registrar's offices under one roof.
Serving as the town's communications centre from 1892, the post office played a vital role in the development of Southern Cross during the Western Australian gold rush.
Its attached residence reflects the way of life of country postmasters in the late nineteenth century.
Saved from demolition following a public campaign in 1976, the beautifully preserved building now operates as a museum, ensuring its history continues to be shared with future generations.
